You may know that Christians who lived in the Roman Empire nearly 2000 years ago often suffered because it was illegal to be a Christian. For about 200 years, many Christians were tortured and killed. The grade 9’s and 10’s have studied what happened to those Christians who were murdered—we call them martyrs or witnesses for Jesus.
In Canada, it is very safe to be a Christian. There are 180 countries in the world; in 50 countries people are attacked just because they are Christian. More than 200 million Christians face persecution in the world today: that’s about 7 times as many people as live in all of Canada. These Christians live in countries where their faith is “illegal, forbidden, or punished.” During reporting for the 2018 World Watch List, 3,066 Christians were murdered, 1,252 were abducted, 1,020 were abused, and 793 churches were attacked.
Today, the class will show you what is happening in two of the very worst countries: Afghanistan and North Korea.
Also, and most important, we will give some ideas about we in Canada can do to help our suffering sisters and brothers.
