Because Afghanistan is an Islamic country, all other religions are sought after not just Christianity. According to the Open Doors website, there are no "official" Christians, but of course many are in hiding.
Does the Afghanistan government really want to eliminate churches and Christian life, or do they just want it to be private and contained?
The government does target Christians and does not just want to contain it. the want to eliminate it altogether because it is an Islamic country. This is why Open Doors says that Christians are being killed for their faith.

Heather Mercer:
Heather Mercer was a missionary to Afghanistan because she had a heart for the poverty and suffering that many were going through. According to CNN, she wanted to help orphans and widows and she zeroed in on the ones in Afghanistan. CNN also says that she led a prayer group specifically for Afghanistan. Her mother didn’t want her to go and she even sent letters to the government asking if there was any way to legally prevent her daughter from going. Heather went anyway and she arrived in Afghanistan in 2001 with fellow missionary Dayna Curry and other aid workers. After being there for only 4 months, Heather and Dayna were both arrested by the Taliban along with 6 other aid workers for spreading the Christian gospel which was forbidden in the Taliban law. They did have a trial, and the Afghan government wanted to make a deal through it. They said that in order for them to release the missionaries, they commanded the US to stop all military action against them. Before this could happen, however, Heather and her group were rescued by anti-Taliban forces and were brought back to safety in the US. Just because she was arrested in the Middle East once did not mean that she would stop serving. She went to Iraq to serve the Muslims and she founded a non-profit organization called Global Hope that serves in the Middle East and meets the family’s specific needs. Finally, she wrote a book called Prisoners of Hope with her fellow missionary Dayna Curry about their experiences in the Middle East.

What happens to the persecuted Christians?
We obviously know that Christians are being persecuted in Afghanistan, but what exactly are the punishments that they are facing? In the 1990s, the Taliban took over Afghanistan with the takeover of Kabul and because they are an Islamic group, they implemented laws based on the Koran. If an Afghan Islam converts to Christianity, they will have some persecution from the country, but the persecution that they face from their family will be worse. Sometimes, Christian converts are sent to a mental institute because their families feel that wanting Christ is a sign of mental illness. It is forbidden to spread the Christian faith under Taliban law and according to the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), Afghan citizens use torture and kidnapping as a means of converting Christians back to Islam. The Afghan government does not allow Christians to worship or show their faith whatsoever. Also, according to the Voice of the Martyrs, beatings, torture, and kidnappings are something to be expected for Christians in Afghanistan. Finally, we know that their lives are at risk just as much.
